Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments. For a person to receive the other sacraments, he/she must first be baptized. Baptism is the "door" which gives access to the other sacraments. It is the first of the three sacraments of Christian Initiation.
Through Baptism, God enables us to participate in his life in Jesus Christ and makes us his children. It is through this sacrament that we receive the Holy Spirit and become members of the People of God, of the Body of Christ, which is the Church. Baptism becomes our commitment to grow in this new life and to strive to acquire spiritual maturity. By baptism, God purifies us from sin.
To schedule a Baptism, please call the church office at least two months before to make arrangements for the baptismal seminar and other preparations.
The Eucharist (traditionally known as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass) is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ: "the source and summit of the Christian life" (CCC#1324). "The holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation" (CCC#1322).
Traditionally, Reconciliation and First Communion are celebrated for the first time in the second grade. Sacramental preparation takes place during CCD class from 5:30 to 6:30PM on Wednesdays.
Parents are the primary catechists for their children. It is important that your child see that religious education is important to you. Growing in faith is a life-long process and not just something that we do when we are young. Our goal is to not only provide religious education to children, but to also support parents in their own faith formation as well.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation. Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism. Through the anointing with the Sacred Chrism oil, the baptized person is “enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.”
Contact Yvonne Busby for information on the preparation program for adults or Edie Gowen for information on Confirmation preparation for youth. Both can be reached at 318-256-5680.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance is a sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ in his love and mercy. It is here that we meet the loving Jesus who offers sinners forgiveness for offenses committed against God and neighbor. At the same time, this sacrament permits sinners to reconcile with the Church, which also is wounded by our sins.
Through this sacrament, we meet Christ in his Church ready and eager to absolve and restore us to new life. In the sacrament of Penance, the forgiveness of sins and the restoration of grace are the gifts received through the outward sign, i.e., the extension of hands and words of absolution pronounced by the priest.
The Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness and especially near the time of death.
If you know of a parishioner in need of an anointing who is not able to attend Mass, please call the church office to arrange for a priest to visit and offer anointing.
Marriage is a gift instituted by Christ that gives us His saving grace. Therefore this is both a celebration for you, your families and friends, AND a celebration for the whole Church. The Church is involved in the preparation for marriage, in the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony, and in the living of the marriage covenant that is established before God and the community. Arrangements must begin at least six months in advance of the date of the wedding. Please call the office for an appointment to arrange for marriage preparation or to schedule reservations for the church or hall.
